Stone and blood
Magnificent buildings made of marble and gold. This is how a limited hunchbacked field worker with rotten teeth imagines the buildings that should be built to honor angels. They only think so because the aristocrats have planted this idea in their heads. Because they give them the fear of sin and eternal hellfire by tolling the bells every morning.
Aren't they wonderful? Are they not sublime? They are a testimony to man's creative capacity. They are a sign of ingenuity and perseverance. Radiantly bright, monuments of awe. Mirror-smooth floors and light that tells of the heroic deeds of bygone eras through colorful windows.
And underneath? In the catacombs? Here, too, a testimony to ingenuity. Torture chambers in which heretics are mutilated and their "dark secrets", which never existed, are elicited from them. And their blood splashes against the walls, the earth absorbs it and soaks the flowers that sprout around the temples.
